Every year, millions gather in Washington for the nation's greatest springtime celebration — the National Cherry Blossom Festival. The festival commemorates the U.S.'s enduring friendship with Japan and signifies the start of spring through celebrations of traditional and contemporary arts and culture.
The 2022 Cherry Blossom Festival will take place March 20-April 11. Though things may look a little different this year, the innovative celebration will continue to honor the tradition of the festival while ensuring the health and safety of participants.
When Will Peak Bloom Be?
The obvious stars of the festival are the thousands of cherry trees that line the Tidal Basin and National Mall. Peak bloom is the enchanting moment when more than 70% of the famous Yoshino cherry trees blossom simultaneously, creating a breathtaking sea of pink petals.
The exact date of the cherry blossom peak in Washington, D.C. is tricky to predict as it depends heavily on the season's weather. It typically occurs between late March and early April and lasts around seven to 10 days. In the last 30 years, the average peak bloom date was March 31. The National Park Service typically provides peak bloom updates throughout March.
However, peak bloom is not the only time to see these gorgeous flowers. If you miss the main bloom, there are dozens of other varieties of cherry trees that bloom at different times.
What to Do at the Cherry Blossom Festival
The 2022 National Cherry Blossom Festival will be the first to feature both in-person and virtual events. For folks in Washington, giant cherry blossom sculptures will be placed throughout the city, featuring local and national artwork. Visitors are encouraged to locate and interact with these icons for chances to win prizes.
Visit the National Mall, Tidal Basin and Jefferson Memorial to take in the natural beauty of the cherry blossoms, or check out the various parks, gardens and museums in the area.
In lieu of a parade, residents all over the city will harness their creativity and the spirit of the celebration to decorate their homes, porches, yards and windows for the Petal Porch Parade.
